Cutting the Cord 101: Getting Ready to Make the Switch

For a lot of folks, the idea of switching internet providers can be a source of anxiety. Who do you go with? What are the fees associated with it? How long will you be without Internet (staying connected is a must these days)? We get it!

But we’re here to alleviate some of those concerns and tell you that it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. Keep reading to learn more about just how easy it is to break things off with your old Internet provider!

Things to Consider When You Switch

All it really takes is a little planning and preparation to make the switch from broadband to fiber Internet. A few phone calls to your current provider and a little research go a long way in making it a smooth, anxiety-proof change!

Here are the four things you need to do before you can enjoy faster speeds and all the streaming you can handle:

  1. Determine your needs.

The Brady Bunch would probably need our top-tier service to accommodate all their devices and streaming, but a smaller family or one with lower usage levels may be fine with a lower tier.

As you look at streaming services, a great place to start is Untangle.TV. With this free tool, just take a simple quiz about your preferred shows and movies to find out what services you’ll need to continue watching your favorites without cable.

  2. Evaluate termination policies.

Your current provider may have a termination policy in place, so it’s a good idea to contact them and see what their policy is. In some cases, the termination fee may be able to be waived if the reason you’re switching is because they violated the contract.

Ultimately, it may be worth it to just pay the fee and move on.

  3. Pick your provider.

You’ve got a lot of options! We’re partial to your friendly neighborhood fiber company (that’s us!), but you have choices. Look at which provider fits your lifestyle and budget best and commit!

Not to brag, but with fiber you’ll get a lot of capacity on a reliable network at prices that compete with traditional broadband.

  4. Cancel your old service.

The last step is to cancel your old service and return any equipment that you may have been renting from them. Simple, right?

It can seem daunting until you break it down but switching Internet providers can be a painless process! Now that you know how, let’s talk about why you might want to.

It’s Time to Make a Change

The benefits of changing from a not-so-great service far outweigh the legwork that goes into doing it. Here are a few of the reasons that you might want to say goodbye to your old provider and move to a new one – like us!

  • Save Money. It can actually be less expensive to go with a new provider than staying in an old contract that can’t compete.
  • Improved Connectivity. With fiber, you can have better connectivity on cables that are designed to handle the bandwidth that most households consume today.
  • Better Customer Service. We’re not the big bad cable company with a phone tree that requires 10 minutes of yelling “Cus-to-mer Ser-vice!” just to talk to a real person. Yuck.
  • Availability. We’re all over Connecticut and Pennsylvania! If we’re not already in your neighborhood, let us know. We’re on a mission to get fiber to everyone!

Go With a Provider You Can Count On

It’s “a thing” to switch providers, and we get it. But it really doesn’t have to be, and it’s important that your internet provider prioritize your connectivity and customer service over profit.

That’s what sets GoNetspeed apart from big, national Internet providers. You need a good internet connection, especially these days with streaming, working from home and remote learning.

Let us show you the difference between “us” and “them”.

How to Watch The 31 Nights of Halloween Without Cable

Fall is upon us! It’s finally time to break out the hoodies, order those PSLs, and – of course – get ready for Halloween. And what says “Halloween” more than sitting down to watch some classic spooky movies with the family?

For years now, a Fall tradition for many has included tuning into “The 31 Nights of Halloween” on Freeform, a channel formerly known as ABC Family.

In case you forgot, “The 31 Nights of Halloween” features family-friendly movies every night for the entire month of October, including films such as the beloved Hocus Pocus, the ever-charming Addam’s Family, the surprisingly touching Casper, and so much more.

But how do you tune into the yearly event if you’ve recently – or not so recently – cut the cord? As we all know, one of the biggest concerns about cutting the cord and switching to fiber-to-the-home is missing out on the things that traditional cable provided.

The good news is that with streaming services, you can never miss a moment of your favorite family Halloween movies.

Here’s how.

Stream Freeform Using Other Services

One of the best ways to watch “The 31 Nights of Halloween” is to use a streaming service to get the Freeform channel.

This can be done in a few ways. One of the easiest is to go here and then pick a provider from the list. We suggest going with Hulu, YouTube TV, or Sling since the other providers on the list are all traditional cable providers.

Once you sign up for the service, you can navigate to the Freeform channel and stream “The 31 Nights of Halloween” to any smart device, such as a TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Roku, phone, laptop and more.

While this method is the best way watch “The 31 Nights of Halloween” and get an experience similar to cable TV (because this is literally watching the cable TV version!), you don’t have to, which leads us to our next point.

Pick and Choose What to Watch Based on the Schedule

The world is your oyster, you own your destiny and that’s why the second way to participate in the movie marathon is to choose your own adventure every night based on Freeform’s schedule.

What do we mean?

Freeform puts out their movie schedule long before “The 31 Nights of Halloween” starts, allowing you to look over the list and see what films are already available to you to stream across all of the services you may have.

For example, since Freeform is part of Disney, many of the movies on the list will be included in a Disney+ subscription. Other movies can be found on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.

This approach not only gives you the freedom to choose what your movie night looks like (and allows you to watch them without any commercial breaks) but also it enables you and your family to pick only your favorites and work together on a line-up.

If you’re really having trouble finding that one movie that doesn’t seem to be anywhere, you can rent movies from Amazon Prime for just a few bucks or grab a physical copy from your local library. The library is an underutilized resource for finding great movies for absolutely nothing.

“The 31 Nights of Halloween:” A Wrap-Up

When it comes to watching Freeform’s annual movie marathon, you have quite a few options after cutting the cord. The best is to find a way to stream the Freeform channel since this is a more complete experience.

Another option is to look over what movies will be broadcasted on Freeform and then making your own movie marathon based on your favorites from the list. You can do this in a combination of ways, but a great place to start is checking out Disney+ since there is a lot of overlap.

Check out “The 31 Nights of Halloween” Schedule here!

The Best Streaming Services for Halloween Movie Marathons

There has never been a better time to be a movie buff, especially around Halloween. While ditching the cable company can make you feel like you’re missing out on Halloween programming, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

But what services should you check out – if you don’t have them already – to maximize your Halloween content consumption and provide you with all of the scares, jumps, and bumps in the night that the season demands?

We have you covered.

For the Family

If you’re looking for great movies and TV shows that fit into the Halloween spirit but still are light enough to watch with the kids (or if you just want a fun watch and not have nightmares all month), services like Disney+ and Hulu are great options.

Both services provide family-friendly films that can get you into the Halloween zone. Hulu also offers some more intense horror films that may be of interest if you’re into that sort of thing.

One of the best things about Hulu is that every year they launch “Huluween,” which turns part of their platform into a Halloween extravaganza with movies of all different genres and rating levels. You can learn more about this year’s “Huluween” here.

As we mentioned previously, Freeform (which used to be ABC Family) hosts their 31 Nights of Halloween event all month, featuring many well-known and beloved Halloween movies and even some old classics like The Goonies, Matilda, Shrek and more.

It’s a great marathon with movies every night that are perfect for the season.

For the True Horror Fans

Stepping out of the family-friendly arena and into some truly scary territory, horror fanatics have a ton of options to watch the latest and greatest films.

There’s obviously the big three: Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. These services have their own original shows, such as Castle Rock on Hulu, which is based in the Stephen King Universe, or Netflix’s wildly successful Stranger Things.

For real horror lovers out there, a new player has recently entered the mix: Shudder.

Shudder is a streaming service solely dedicated to horror films. Their offering includes original films, shorts and shows, while also showcasing little-known films from indie creators and huge franchises like Friday the 13th and Halloween.

Shudder also has a wide range of documentaries that explore what goes on behind the scenes of classic horror movies to allow super fans the inside scoop.

Make Halloween Your Own

The best part of subscribing to streaming services is that you can create your own movie marathons. If you want them light and for the family, Disney+ and Hulu have great offerings. For people that really love their horror, it’s a great time to check out Shudder.

Of course, many people have these services already, and we think the best way to make a great Halloween movie-watching experience is to look at the offers of everything you have available and decide what looks good!

Cutting the Cord 101: How to Watch Local News Without Cable

Cutting the cord is a great way to get faster internet service without the headaches that come with traditional providers. However, there is a tradeoff. Without the cable company, which has made it a habit of bundling internet, phone and TV services, you’ll have to switch up how you consume some of entertainment you watch regularly.

One of these areas is local news. Without cable, you may worry you will no longer be able to watch the news from your area and keep updated on what’s happening in your community.

But fear not! Staying connected to events, weather, and alerts from your area is easier than ever, and there are a few ways you can do it.

Switch to Online News or Local Papers

One of the easiest ways to stay connected is to start checking out your local news station’s site by making it your homepage, adding it as a favorite on your browser or downloading their app (if they have one).

While this will keep you informed, it does require you to take a more proactive approach to consume your news, one that isn’t scheduled for you every day at a specific time. However, it’s also a bit more freeing, allowing you to take control over how and when you utilize media.

Newspapers are also a great thing to check out. Yes, newspapers. While this form of media is being phased out as digital media grows every year, newspapers are still a nice way to support local journalism and also stay current with events. It also arrives on a specific cadence every day, providing a bit of a routine.

While some may roll their eyes are signing up for paper service, this throwback method can reduce your screen time and often has more in-depth coverage than a quick news segment.

The Secret Your Cable Provider Doesn’t Want You to Know

While you may be thinking, “well, that’s good and all, but I really enjoy watching my local news on my TV,” that’s OK, too, because there are many options available, including one that no one seems to want to talk about.

OK, here it is. Are you ready?

Your local news stations are likely already free for you. Yes, you heard that right. You do not need cable (or internet if we’re being 100% honest) to watch local broadcasts.

This is because local stations still transmit their shows over the air, meaning that all you need is an antenna (and many TVs come with them built-in) to pick up your local news and even local sports.

And these aren’t those old rabbit ears from the past with signals that come and go. In fact, modern broadcasts come through in HD that, according to some, looks even better than streaming services.

So how do you set all of this up? Take a look at your TV to see if there is an antenna built in. If there isn’t, grabbing one off Amazon or at a big box store like Best Buy can provide you with access to local news coverage for life!

It can really be that simple.

Streaming Services: A One-Two Punch

If you don’t like the idea of using an antenna to watch local news and sports, there are many streaming services that will meet your needs.

Hulu + TV, YouTube TV, and others all allow you to watch local news just like you would on your TV. These services will be more pricey than turning to online news or getting your broadcasts free over the air, but they also give you access to a ton of other content like shows, movies and more that you can’t get anywhere else.

This option is best suited for those that want to cut the cord and will likely be subscribing to various streaming services anyway.

Watching Local News: Never Miss a Moment

Watching local news without cable can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! There are many solutions out there that make staying connected to what’s happening in your community not only possible but quite frankly easier.

We recommend giving some of these ideas a shot to see what works for you. For the closest experience to what you had with cable, grab yourself an antenna, you’ll be shocked at what you can get for free!

Community Connect: Cutting the Cord

We’re sure you’ve heard about cutting the cord and making the switch to fiber. But what the heck is fiber and why would you want to do that? Well, there are some big benefits to making the switch.

Keep reading to learn more about fiber, why you should break up with your cable company and how you can learn even more about fiber with our Community Connect Facebook Live series!

What it means

Fiber optics are complicated to explain. Basically, it’s information sent on a beam of light through tiny glass strands. What this means for you is that you get high-bandwidth connections that allow communities like yours to stream more, download faster and upload quicker.

DSL and cable were great back in the day, but sending information over copper wire just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Why it’s popular

The reasons people love fiber are probably obvious (Who doesn’t like faster speeds and being able to stream more?), but there’s more to it than just that. Fiber is more reliable as it doesn’t rely on old technology, and there’s room for expansion as your needs grow.

It’s OK to do a happy dance right now, gamers. We get you.

With fiber, you can get a more reliable and faster internet connection than with standard cable. While there are a few differences, the bottom line is that you get to enjoy faster internet and streaming for your favorite shows!

Why it’s better

Times are changing, and with change comes a need to keep pace with more and more demand for bandwidth. The world and our consumption of digital media isn’t going to slow down. With the need to work from home and virtual schooling alone, we’ve seen DSL and cable providers pushed to the limit.

With fiber, there’s virtually no limit.

That alone makes it a smart choice compared to other providers. Whether it’s a month from now or in five years, fiber can keep up with your needs and make sure that Mom can look at family pictures, Dad can stream his favorite DIY shows and the kids can be gaming—all without disruption.

Community Connect

GoNetspeed Expanding Fiber-to-the-Home Internet to 18,500 locations in Fairfield, New Haven and Hartford Counties

Hartford, Conn. – September 24, 2021 – GoNetspeed, a high-speed fiber-to-the-home Internet provider, announced that it is constructing Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) infrastructure in portions of Fairfield, New Haven and Hartford Counties. In addition to GoNetspeed’s recently announced plans to deliver fiber to approximately 4,150 locations in Berlin and New Britain, the company will construct an additional 220+/- miles of fiber to serve 18,500+/- locations beginning in early 2022.
In Fairfield County, the investment in FTTH infrastructure will serve approximately 6,000+/- locations over 60+/- road miles in Bridgeport and Trumbull. In Hartford County, Bloomfield, West Hartford and Windsor will see a build of approximately 8,200+/- locations over 110+/- road miles. Service is expected to be available by early 2022 in both counties.

In New Haven County, a 50+/- mile build will serve approximately 3,600+/- locations in West Haven and 700+/- locations in the Sea Bluff area of Milford. Service in this area should be available by early to mid-2022.
Residents can visit the following links to see current service areas and plans for expansion:

Fiber Internet offers symmetrical speeds, meaning that both download and upload are equally fast. The connectivity challenges that people experience with using video conferencing associated with telecommuting, on-line learning and telemedicine have emphasized the importance of fast upload speeds. GoNetspeed offers residential speeds ranging from 150 Mbps to 1 Gbps. For businesses, GoNetspeed can customize speeds beyond Gigabit capability if necessary.

“We’re working quickly to build out the next generation of fiber communications in Connecticut and are proud to be filling this need,” said Tom Perrone, Chief Operating Officer for GoNetspeed. “I’m excited to introduce new subscribers in these communities to the unparalleled customer service and unmatched speed and performance GoNetspeed prides itself on.”

In addition to the areas in which fiber infrastructure is currently being constructed, GoNetspeed continues to evaluate new areas in which to expand. Perrone said that visitors to the site who don’t see their area on the map should tell their friends, family, and neighbors to submit their interest at www.gonetspeed.com. According to Perrone, GoNetspeed uses those submissions to help decide where to expand next.

Tropical Breeze Recipe

Harness a Tropical Breeze This Summer

Mother Nature isn’t always the most reliable when it comes to summertime weather. Consider those hot and humid days where you’d trade anything for a breeze. For those times, it’s good to have an ace up your sleeve—or in this case, some ice in a glass…and delicious tropical juices to go along with it.

Make your own breeze with this easy, island-inspired mocktail:

  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • 2 ounces cranberry juice
  • 1 ounce coconut water
  • Splash of grenadine

Combine all ingredients and pour over ice in a Rocks glass (and Old Fashioned glass works well, too). Or for a layered look, pour the liquids into the glass based on sugar content, starting with the highest. Garnish with oranges, pineapple, or cherries. For a more adult take, substitute coconut malibu rum for the coconut water.

It’s a super simple, yet delicious taste of the tropics that’ll leave you feeling refreshed. Enjoy responsibly!

Outdoor Tech Upgrades

Breathe more life into your outdoor living space with these upgraded tech tips from GoNetspeed

Get your home summer-ready

Summer. The very word sparks excitement at the thought of warm weather and longer days. With the kids back home and the sun shining, you’ll take any excuse to spend more time outside. But if getting your outdoor sanctuary ready for summer fun sounds more exhausting than exhilarating, we’ve compiled some helpful tips to get the most out of the space—and your freakishly fast GoNetspeed fiber internet.

Movie night, al fresco

Ready to recreate the drive-in movie experience right in your backyard? All you need is a screen, a projector, and great internet (check). This inflatable screen can be set up in two minutes or less and boasts 20ft of viewable screen area, and our pick for a projector is this Smart TV model from LG which allows you to make the most out of your streaming subscription services and can last up to 2 ½ hours before needing to be plugged in.

Turn up the heat without feeling the burn

Spend more time catching up with friends and family and less time hovering over the burgers by using a smart thermometer. A WiFi-enabled probe thermometer that sticks to the side of your existing grill can alert you when food has reached your desired level of doneness. Or if you want to become a true master of your grill, this all-in-one model from Traeger can be remotely monitored and controlled via app or through a smart assistant like Alexa.

Light the way to brighter days (and nights)

From flood lights to strings of Edison bulbs, leveling up your outdoor lighting game is an easy way to boost to your safety as well as help you set the mood for get-togethers on the lawn. Some smart lighting options, like those from Hue and Ring, are app-controlled and Alexa-enabled, meaning they can easily become part of your smart home ecosystem. Other brands offer third party add-ons that can give you this ease of use, too, like the Smart LEDs from Sengled

Give Mother Nature a helping hand

If your green thumb has taken a turn for the dark side, it might be time to get back in the zone with a smart sprinkler system. These devices range in intelligence from the more basic set-and-forget to internet-enabled models that connect to the Internet and use up-to-date weather information to adjust accordingly. No matter the size of your green space—or your budget—today’s tech offerings have you and your yard covered. For maximum intelligence, try the Rachio 3 which supports eight or 16 zones (and a 12-zone version exclusive to Costco). It’s also voice-controlled through Alexa, Google, and HomeKit.

Put the “rad” back in radio

Ok, so maybe people don’t say “rad” anymore, but that doesn’t mean your outdoor audio can’t benefit from an upgrade. Weatherproof, Bluetooth-equipped, and voice-controlled, outdoor audio has come a long way. Choosing the right outdoor audio solution might seem like a Herculean task, especially if you’re trying to push as much functionality out of it as possible. A particularly “rad” option would be the Sonos Move, a portable, waterproof speaker that can pull double duty as a sound system for your outdoor entertainment area and a voice-enabled smart assistant to control all your other gadgets. Whatever you choose, look for options that work with Alexa or Google, have a long battery life and interact with the rest of your smart devices.

However you choose to breathe a little extra life into your outdoor living space this summer, we hope these suggestions were helpful. Now go enjoy your backyard oasis!
